NRAO Call for Proposals: Semester 2021A

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) invites scientists to participate in the Semester 2021A Call for Proposals for the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), High Sensitivity Array (HSA), and Global 3mm VLBI Array (GMVA).

The submission deadline for Semester 2021A proposals is Monday, 3 August 2020, at 17:00 EDT (21:00 UTC).

Eligible entries include radio images, multiwavelength composite images, animations, data visualizations, 3-D models, and others. All entries must include radio data obtained with the VLA. The First Prize winner will receive \$1,000, Second Prize \$500, and Third Prize \$250. The NRAO and the ngVLA Science Advisory Council are pleased to announce that an online ngVLA Summer Short Talk Series will begin Thursday, 25 June, 3 p.m. EDT and continue weekly (except 2 July) through 10 September. The ngVLA Talk Series website contains the schedule and information regarding registration and attendance.

We are a month from the scheduled transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2, where we considered opening up our activities, potentially with face-to-face meetings, visitors, and travel. Realistically, this transition is not going to be possible within the next several weeks. The book Open Skies: The National Radio Astronomy Observatory and its Impact on US Radio Astronomy, by Ken Kellermann, Ellen Bouton, and Sierra Brandt has recently been published by Springer. Open Skies documents the history of NRAO from the time of the first discussions in the early 1950s about building a national radio astronomy facility through the construction of ALMA. The emphasis is on the people and politics involved in creation of NRAO and its unique facilities.
